Every term, Willow Walk Kindergarten encourages children’s family members to come and share their knowledge with the children. This week, one of our children’s grandmothers came to the room to show everyone how to make fresh pasta!
First the children needed to mix wheat flour with semolina and water and then the fun part which was kneading the dough until it was firm. Once everyone had a chance to knead the dough, it was rolled to make it flat. Then, they cut it into smaller parts before rolling the sections into the cutter to make long strips of pasta!
Two different kinds of pasta, tagliatelle and spaghetti were demonstrated to show the children the different varieties of pasta. A really lovely time was had with our special visitor and the children no doubt had lots to tell their parents when they were picked up. Knowledge is most appreciated and absorbed when it is shared and experienced. Simple experiences that many of us take for granted are often the most appreciated and beneficial for children.
Once the pasta was cooked, the children had a marvellous time enjoying their creation for lunch; many commented on how different it was compared with store bought pasta and there was much discussion about the flavour and texture as well as the amount of work it is to make food look nice and taste good. Maybe we will produce some budding Aurora chefs from experiences like these!
